If this is what the future looks like, Manchester City could be in for some fun again.

Bernardo Silva spoke of 'cycles and generations' coming to an end this week, echoing his manager's admissions that City must engage in a natural rebuild in the summer.

In truth, that rebuild has already begun and six players who could be set for big roles shone at Tottenham.

Erling Haaland has signed up for the next decade and City immediately looked better for his return. He converted from a move involving each of the new-look, energetic front five which started with Omar Marmoush giving the ball to Savinho, then to Haaland, on to Nico Gonzalez, who set up Jeremy Doku for the cross.

For a welcome change this term it was City cutting through the heart of an opponent rather than the other way round.

Doku was a threat all night, rubbishing Jamie Carragher's claims that he isn't good enough for City. Savinho was equally as dangerous on the other side, and Gonzalez showed what he can offer next to Rodri next season in a more advanced role.

Marmoush is the energy and industry that others like Bernardo or Julian Alvarez used to provide.

Add Abdukodir Khusanov to the mix with another impressive performance against a big side and the 'future' that Guardiola referred to at the weekend is taking shape.

Watching from the bench as this new era began were Bernardo, Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Ilkay Gundogan. Only Bernardo of that trio came on.

That was for Gonzalez, who looked unhappy when replaced and appeared to ask Guardiola why it was his number up. There was frustration, and clearly a lot of self-confidence, but channelled in the right way.

Guardiola offered the explanation Gonzalez asked for, even if it didn't seem to satisfy him, and that can only be a positive thing.

Explaining the discussion after the game, Guardiola fired a warning back to Gonzalez not to challenge him, saying: "It was not for that. There was an action that should be more in the position, he jumps and shouldn't have done it. It was a tactical conversation. Of course in that age to complain to the manager is a big problem! It's not the case."

Gonzalez showed how he would line up with Rodri at Spurs - using Mateo Kovacic as a partner instead. He helped set up a goal, got forward well at times, and continued his impressive start. Guardiola named that Gonzalez-Rodri combination when talking about the 'future' that was on show at Spurs.

Maybe his standing up (or asking back) to Guardiola will prove just as important. City haven't just signed a player who has slotted straight into their system, but one who wants to improve and is not afraid to put his own position across to more experienced teammates and now his manager too. Guardiola will see a leader in his actions on the pitch and (just) off it.

With a new-look front five involved in the game's only goal, Gonzalez showing his future role when Rodri returns and a dangerous renewal of the Doku-Savinho partnership, maybe Bernardo is right.

As once generation comes to an end, another could be getting started.
